Jorg Dubin has been making paintings of sexuality through a lens of brutality like an undeterred train for decades in his Laguna Beach studio.  If we break down the subjects of his latest feat we find pairs of desperate souls lingering in a waiting room of purification. The artist places the viewer in the same room and offers a question, “where do I stand in this metaphor”? The more interesting question lays not in the hands of the viewer but in that of the artist’s intention. Dubin rarely gives the viewer any clues as to the whereabouts or hints as to the surroundings of his subjects. They are in a sterilized room, put in a lab and studied like mice. The sentiment is stripped away and he is showing us the results of the studies. The subjects all take on a similar sum no matter how large and menacing or how young and sweet. Even in the seemingly polarized places they occupy in the world, they end up having much in common. This is much because what is really on display is the artist himself, his relationship with sexuality and brutality, culture and isolation, anger and beauty, hard and soft, judgment and fear.
