ROBERT BERMAN GALLERY presents DIFFUSION, an intimate collection of photographs by photographer Sharon Johnson-Tennant. In this collection of quiet and ethereal photographs, the viewer is taken on a visual escape from Los Angeles. This composed, yet organic series incorporates works from India, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Malibu, and Block Island, R.I. where Johnson-Tennant spent her childhood summers. The images reflect a diffusion of both light and sky, combining the sense of the surreal and the bucolic. DIFFUSION exhibits the artist’s intuition sense, showing a natural harmony in the photograph’s composition, balanced by a combination of color and sensuality in the light and details, shadows and textures.

Johnson-Tennant received her B.F.A. from Skidmore College and continued with graduate studies in Color Theory and the Science of Color at N.Y.U. She had a long career in New York City as both a Fashion and Textile designer. This experience included hands-on technical experience in dye labs, design and textile studios worldwide, which helped her perceive different perspectives of color as her eye became more finely tuned. In 1993, Sharon Johnson-Tennant moved to Los Angeles, had four children (including a set of triplets) in five years, and found herself needing to reconnect to her creative side. She picked up a camera while raising four babies, took technical photography classes, and never saw the world the same again.

Sharon Johnson-Tennant’s critical acclaim has come in the form of more than 12 awards, in the past two years, including second place in the Julia Margaret Cameron award. She has been juried into four different shows, picked up on international Nikon and Canon websites and has been published in several magazines, including National Geographic Traveler and PDN. Sharon was also penned as one of the “Five Notable Photographers” last year in FABRIK magazine. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
