The Dream Machine, 2010

Mixed Media Light Sculpture

"The Dream Machine induces a dream-like state through rhythmic pulses of light, experienced even with eyes closed. Inspired by REM sleep, it evokes vivid, meditative visuals while awake. Its lenticular design evenly diffuses light, allowing for direct engagement—whether with eyes open or closed—blurring the line between perception, consciousness, and inner vision.

I created The Dream Machine to evoke a meditative, dream-like state while awake, experienced with either eyes open or closed. Inspired by the writings of Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs in The Third Mind and Gysin’s original Dream Machine plans, this piece reinterprets their vision using modern materials and techniques. Floating cutout patterns, combined with lenticular glass, diffuse rhythmic strobing light to create the illusion of floating light or flame—an element often used in meditation to focus awareness. Here, the effect becomes a portal for conscious, immersive reflection."
