THIS SIDE UP

September 8 – 29, 2012

In September, Los Angeles based artist and UCLA lecturer Bill Barminski will debut his first solo exhibition in over five years (This Side Up), at Robert Berman Gallery’s new B7 Gallery in Santa Monica.
Barminski, an adjunct professor in new media, digital art and design at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, is preparing to pair large scale video installations with a series of elaborately crafted cardboard sculptures depicting some of popular culture’s most subversive products: guns, spray-paint, and skateboards. The video sequences will feature footage taken from a recent group exhibition at POW Gallery in London, where Barminski filmed artists destroying their work using items from his cardboard arsenal.
Barminksi produces artwork that critically engages consumer-culture, mass media, and the strange nostalgia people feel towards “classic” products of the postwar era. His work has been widely received and reviewed in publications such as Art Forum, Flash Art, and Art in America.
This Side Up will open on September 8, 2012 with an artist’s reception beginning at 6:00 pm.
